The Mighty Linn 9000

Copying Disks of Linn 9000 samples/sequences on a PC ------------------------------------------------------

Thanks to Rob Joyner who sent me info on a DOS software program called teledisk that will do AKAI disk images. I tried this with a Linn 9000 disk and it worked!

I did a web search for "teledisk" and found a copy on this site. I'm sure it's at other places as well.

This program is a useful for Linn 9000 users because it will make a complete copy of a Linn 9000 diskette including formatting and copying names and files of all sequences and/or samples.

Without this you have to load your samples into memory and save them one by one giving them each a new name for every individual save on a second disk. Anyone who has survived this process will gladly tell you it is not a fun thing to do.

Teledisk is kind of a mixed blessing because does not change this process for individual sounds. You can't save a specific sample nor can you read what is on a diskette. You must make a complete copy of everything that's on the disk good or bad.

The process takes a few minutes per diskette (hey it's an old DOS thang) but in my testing it did work without any problems. I used DSDD diskettes which is what the Linn 9000 diskdrive was created to use. Given the fickle nature of the 9000 I wouldn't reccomend using HD diskettes.

So, while not perfect it's at least it's a way to backup and trade complete disks of samples and sequences. I have organized a few samples on individual disk images which you can download and try for yourself. These will be growing as more users submit them so (send 'em on!).
Download these disk images from the Main page.
