NEDANDANDY'S - 23APR1999

DJ Aaron Rosenberg and DavidBivins performed at Nedandandy's, Brooklyn, on April 23rd. Unfortunately, our visual communications director was too looped-out to take any photographs, so you'll have to do with a textual description and, um, drawings.

aaronAaron waxed the tables poetic with a blend of techno/garage/acid that got the asses shaking and the sweat flowing. A het couple trainspotting for over an hour surely spotted Ian Pooley, 808 State, and Joey Beltram among lesser- and better-known platters. Retiring with his signature "I'm just going to let the record run out. You figure out what's going to happen next" gesture, Aaron kicked back with his pal Jenna and some delicious brownies to go with his beer.

DavidBivins davidcounted 6 Guinness draft-pak cans under his Moog when he hit "play" on the SP-12... no one counted how many piled up by the end when they were swept away. Beginning with a downtemp dubby vibe, DB ramped up to clubdance tempo within a couple of tracks. The setup was big, occupying an A-frame, but the groove was minimal, comprising a couple of monosynths, a handful of samples, and a couple of drum machines. The set gradually built to holy terror funked out beats over copshow carchase basslines and heavily distorted latin percussion. From then on it was improv all the way.

The end of the night found veteran indie rocker Peter Messina (Beg For Eden) pounding out an impromptu techno mix of "Mary Had a Little Lamb."

NEDANDANDY'S - 09JUL1999

aaronDJ Aaron Rosenberg and The Bald Bastard performed again at Nedandandy's, Brooklyn, the 9th of July. How was it? Well, Aaron and The Bastard had a good time, but few people were around to listen—there were 70-80 people on the roof escaping the oppressive heat in the place! Oh well, they don't know what they were missing. You don't have to, though—just go to the audio page to hear what The Bald Bastard davidwas doing with all those knobs (the second part is better).

Aaron dropped impressive sets and demonstrated that a big audience isn't always necessary to nail the techno vibe (though it's preferred—we'll have to get some air conditioning in there).

The Bald Bastard took a different approach this time. No A-frame in sight, he went for an almost completely improvised set using his SH-101, TB-303, TR-606, Jomox XBase09, Zoom 1201 and an AS FB3 filter bank. Sure, it was a bit Roland-heavy, but this stuff is so easy to gig with.

Not much else to report, other than the guys should have executed the master plan—putting speakers on the roof!
